HALAM INTERIORS · The joinery guide

A closer look atwhat makes a piece.

Understand the visible finish, the construction beneath and the details worth checking. A practical companion to choosing your joinery.

AI-generated illustrative material studies. These are not completed-project photographs, supplier samples or proof of technical performance. Confirm products and construction with physical samples and specifications.

01 / Finishes

The surface you see.

A finish describes the visible face. The supporting board, edge treatment and how the material is applied are separate choices.

Timber, veneer & material junctions

Veneer is a thin layer of real timber bonded to a supporting board. Solid timber runs through the section. Both show natural variation; agree the species, grain direction and finish using physical samples.

Look closely: follow the grain across neighbouring fronts, the spacing of slats and the junction where timber meets metal.

Detail study

Timber screens

The rhythm, spacing and depth of timber slats shape the way a space feels.

Detail study

Material junction

An illustrative study of the junction between timber and metal, with a clean join and considered surfaces.

Film study

Timber veneer

Grain continuity across adjacent fronts.

Glass, reflection & light

Clear, tinted, textured and frosted glass change what you see through a cabinet. Framing, edge treatment, backing and lighting all influence the final appearance.

Specify together: confirm the glass type, thickness, safety requirements, shelf supports and access to lighting components for the intended use.

Detail study

Glass cabinetry

Glass, framing and light work together to give display cabinetry depth.

Film study

Glass & light

Frame, reflection and depth.

Painted & wrapped faces

Prepared MDF can be painted or wrapped with a decorative film. Agree the sheen, profile and edge detail for the selected system.

Laminate & factory-finished panels

Decorative surfaces are combined with a specified supporting board. Confirm the product, core and suitability for its location.

Metal, mirror & other accents

These need their own backing, fixing and edge details. Review the selected product and its care guidance alongside your other finishes.

02 / Internals

What sits beneath.

MDF, particleboard and plywood describe different board constructions. A melamine face is a surface, not a board grade. Specify the core, thickness, edges and support for the room and intended use.

Edges, profiles & shadow gaps

An exposed board edge may be finished with matching edging, timber lipping, paint or a wrapped surface. Recessed handles and framed doors need their own clearances and junction details.

Check the drawing: look for consistent gaps, tidy corners and comfortable finger clearance. The illustration shows a design idea; confirm the actual construction before making.

Detail study

Framed edge

A raised timber frame, recessed veneer panel and shadow line: look at how the layers meet.

Film study

Recessed handle detail

A recessed profile and an even shadow gap.

Storage that fits everyday life

Start with the things you need to store. Decide shelf spacing, drawer divisions, reach and access before the exterior is finalised. Appliance cabinets also need clearances, services and a route for maintenance.

Plan ahead: confirm appliance model numbers and installation instructions, shelf loads and access to plumbing, power and lighting drivers with your project team.

Detail study

Appliance integration

Plan cabinetry around the appliance dimensions, ventilation and opening clearances specified by its manufacturer.

Detail study

Considered storage

Organise compartments around everyday objects so they are easy to see, reach and put away.

03 / Quality

Care in every detail.

A well-chosen finish needs suitable construction and careful fitting. Check the actual sample, hardware specification and completed installation together.

Hinges, drawers & careful adjustment

Hardware must suit the door or drawer size, weight and intended load. Check alignment, fixing positions, clearances and adjustment. A smooth-looking film cannot verify the performance of a real mechanism.

At handover: open each door and drawer, check for rubbing and uneven gaps, and confirm the selected hardware and care instructions.

Detail study

Concealed hinges

Look at mounting, clearance and adjustment; confirm the hinge specification for the selected door.

Detail study

Architectural hardware

Check metal finishes, mounting positions and the accuracy of each junction against samples and the actual installation.

Film study

Drawer detail

A closer look at the drawer and runner arrangement. An illustrative film, not a mechanism or load test.
